ICE Spotlight: University of Detroit Mercy

Who: 1st & 2nd Year Graduate Orthodontic Residents & Clinical Instructors at the University of Detroit Mercy, School of Dentistry

ICE Module: Patient Education

This week, we focus on Orthodontic Residents at the University of Detroit Mercy, School of Dentistry. Starting in October, 1st and 2nd Year Residents will have the ability to use the Patient Education module within ICE. The residents will be using the animations as part of treatment plan presentations to their patients and parents in the Graduate Orthodontic Clinic.

Dr. Jeffrey Berger, Clinical Professor at UDM, chose ICE for the program because “it possess the largest animation library of all current software programs and is delivered almost instantly from cloud computing. The residents can individualize the animation software for each patient’s treatment plan as well as having the ability to control the length and duration of each animation. This may include not only the orthodontic treatment but in addition, surgical, restorative, endodontic and periodontal aspects of the proposed interdisciplinary treatment. The ability to create a Global Template for repeated basic treatment combinations is an extremely helpful tool. The ICE animation software includes the ability for the patient.”

Dr. Berger goes on to note the impact that the use of ICE animations will have on the level of patient education provided in the clinic. “The ability to use the ICE animation system greatly enhances the level of patient education and cooperation. The ability for the clinician to present a clear graphic animation of the appliance(s) and tooth movement, or combinations of treatment modalities, affords the patient an unparalleled visual image and a greater understanding of the proposed treatment. Gone are the days of using fingers and thumbs to illustrate tooth movement!!”

Residents of the program will continue to use ICE for the duration of their Residency.

In addition to using the Patient Education in the clinic, Dr. Berger is actively working with ICE to add new and refined animations to the Patient Education library. Expanding the library means continued enhancement to the Patient Education system for educational institutions, clinics & patients.
